Entertainment options for Homecoming Weekend

Whether you choose to participate in homecoming activities or not, there is no denying that there is a plethora of activities offered during Homecoming Weekend that can serve as great on-campus entertainment options for students. Homecoming 2014, which will take place this weekend, from Friday, Oct. 17 through Sunday, Oct. 19, is no exception.

The weekend begins on Friday morning at 11 a.m. with the dedication of the new Science Center – this isn’t an entertainment option, per se, but for those science majors and science enthusiasts out there, this is one event you won’t want to miss.

At 5 p.m. on Friday, the annual homecoming pep rally will take place in Steele Hall, at which the homecoming king and queen will be crowned.

If you are more of the artistic type, be sure to stop by the Cathy and Jesse Marion Art Gallery Friday night from 7 to 9 p.m. for the opening reception of “We Were All,” a new exhibit by Endi Poskovic, an internationally-known print artist.

Also opening on Friday night is “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” the first show in this year’s Walter Gloor Mainstage Season. This production will put a ‘60s twist on the Shakespearean classic. There will be performances Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

At 8 p.m. on Friday, there will be a free Reunion Jazz Ensemble Concert in Rosch Recital Hall, and from 9 to 11 p.m., “Midnight Madness” will run, hosted by House of HOOPS in conjunction with the department of athletics. This event will take place in the Bob Steele Multipurpose Room in Steele Hall and will involve various athletic games and contests, including a full court shot contest and sack races.

The homecoming fun will continue on Saturday with a tour of President Horvath’s home at 2 p.m.

Later on in the afternoon, music enthusiasts can get their concert fix at the School of Music Choral Showcase Concert, featuring College Choir, Chamber Choir and Women’s Choir in Rosch Recital Hall at 4 p.m.
