Some Like It Hot presented a sold-out Acafest 2015 on Friday, March 28. The night also featured groups from SUNY Geneseo and University at Buffalo. People were anxious as they waited outside the Williams Center Multi-Purpose Room.
The muffled sounds of the a cappella groups were heard through the wooden door as they had a late sound check. Family, friends and students grew anxious for the event to start, but, around 15 minutes after 7 p.m, the doors opened. Every seat in the MPR was filled, and some students resorted to standing in the back.
“I apologize, we were doing sound check to make sure you get the very best show,” manager of Some Like It Hot, Brooklynn Ruggieri, said. Some Like It Hot opened up with a quick performance to get the ball rolling for the event.
Dynamic Intonation, the first jazz a cappella group on campus, started with a Justin Timberlake mash-up including hit songs, “Cry Me a River,” “Lovestoned” and “Suit and Tie.” The group then slowed things down with a song called “When I Fall in Love.”
“We want to take this next song back to more of our jazz roots,” singer Vaughn Faison said. The song complimented the group well, and it showed how much jazz has influenced the group.
There were hardly any breaks between each group. The Riveters were next to take the stage. They were formed in Spring 2011 and are an all-female group.
The group opened up with “Pat Medlytar,” which was a mixture of Pat Benatar songs featuring “Love is a Battlefield,” “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” and “Shadows of The Night.”
But the song that was most beautifully done was their version of “Turn To Stone” by Ingrid Michaelson. Katelyn Dietz did a remarkable solo of the song, with the rest of the group singing a beautiful harmony.
It truly left the room speechless and made loud applause erupt in the room. The group ended with Ariana Grande’s “Break Free.”
The last Fredonia group to perform was Much More Chill, which is a Fredonia all-male a cappella group, who also recently celebrated its 15th anniversary. They brought lots of humor to the stage, as well as very upbeat songs, including “Demons” by Imagine Dragons.
But the song that got the whole place cheering and singing was the group’s version of R. Kelly’s “Bump N’Grind.” Much More Chill added a lot of beatboxing to each song that made it very danceable and showed off the talent of the male group.
Between the Lines (SUNY Geneseo) and The Buffalo Chips (University at Buffalo) also performed at the event.
