Advice Column: Signing up for classes

BRIONA SAAS

Hello to all the busy students of Fredonia! We have an important week coming up. I’m sure you’ve already realized after finishing up advising week that this week we’re all going to continue signing up for classes for next fall.

This is a fresh start for learning new things and meeting new people, and it’s important to really do your research before picking just any class. Take the time to get to know yourself better and understand your needs when it comes to making a schedule.

Sometimes we may not have the option of choosing when certain classes are scheduled due to the demands of some classes … but if the classes you’re choosing are a little more flexible, pay attention to your sleep and eating schedule. This can make next semester a little easier and less stressful if you have structured sleeping and eating habits.

By now we’ve all gotten to know what we can and can’t handle. So if you’re one of those people that can’t wake up for those 8 a.m.s, make it easier and take some later classes. If you’re an early riser, take advantage of that, and get those classes out of the way.

Now, when it comes to thinking about the actual classes you might take, be aware of both CCCs and classes that fulfill your major requirements. We attend a liberal arts college, so classes oriented towards our major are not the only things that will help us graduate; it’s those CCCs, too!

I’ll admit they’re not the best, and we’re all going to face at least one that isn’t our strong suit, but there are plenty to choose from in each subject, so do your research, and choose the right one for you. Learning about your professors for these courses will help make the classes less stressful if you have a good teacher helping you. A great site to check out online is http://www.ratemyprofessors.com, where you can get feedback from students who have had these professors and even get a letter grade rating of their performance.

When it comes to credits, challenge yourself, but don’t overdo it. We all need time to relax, so don’t take too many classes; you may never get a breather, and that can actually hurt your grade. If you have any additional questions and are worried about your schedule, make sure you keep in touch with your advisers; it’s their job to help.
