I am very particular when it comes to beer. I’m not usually adventurous in trying different kinds. When I have tried a new beer, it was because my dad or a friend had ordered one and given me a taste.
This is how I realized I liked Corona and Stella Artois. Guinness, on the other hand, not so much.
Dark beer is just not my taste.
EBC is a little more expensive than other bars in Fredonia, and rightfully so. You won’t find college students sweatily dancing to loud music in EBC; that’s not the atmosphere it provides.
EBC also carries a lot of craft beer, which are more expensive than Busch and Coors.
The beer I ordered was five dollars.
If I wanted to, I could have added another five dollars and grabbed a six pack from Crosby’s, but this was all about the experience.
The beer I decided to try was a seasonal selection, Gordo Burro.
Gordo Burro has 5.5 alcohol by volume (ABV) and 17 international bitterness units (IBU). It was described on EBC’s menu as, “a Mexican lager sparkling golden, light and refreshing.”
Now, I usually can’t pinpoint the exact flavor that I taste when drinking beer, and I’m not sure if that’s because I’m not paying attention, or because I focus on finishing the drink and ordering another one immediately after.
This time I actually put some thought into my selection.
Considering the heat has been unbearable and my roommates and I walked to the bar, I wanted to order a beer that was light and refreshing. According to the description, this beer was just that.
I watched the bartender pour the beer and place it on the bar in front of me. He then stopped me as I began to reach for the beer. It wasn’t ready. He needed to place a slice of lime on the rim.
I’m not sure about anyone else but something about lime makes me enjoy a drink more. Having something like a Corona or a Tequila shot without a lime: it’s just not right.
I guess that is exactly what the bartender thought regarding Gordo Burro.
The first taste was immediately refreshing.
After a few sips, I began to notice a sense of sparkling as described by the menu, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The sparkling sensation must be popular because the rise of sparked seltzers has skyrocketed in the past year.
It seems that most college girls, and even a good majority of guys, drink Truly and White Claw. I’m not sure if they actually like the sparkling sensation, or if they’re just drinking it because it has fewer calories. Either way, sparkling drinks are a hit and so was Gordo Burro for me.
I was pleasantly surprised by Gordo Burro and how much I enjoyed the beer. Does that mean I will be adventurous and try different types of beer? Not positive, but I know that Gordo Burro is a beer I will order again, as long as it’s in season.
