Rake leaves in the morning, celebrate Halloween festivities in the evening.
This year, Fredonia’s Fall Sweep took place on Oct. 27.
For the past 14 years, campus has come together to rake the lawns of Fredonia’s community members.
This is a way for students to give back to the village that has become their home.
The yearly tradition is organized by The Applied Communication Association (ACA) and Public Relations Student Society of America, in coordination with the Office of Volunteer and Community Services.
Many clubs and organizations on campus volunteer to rake in order to bond, enjoy morning fall air and give back to the community.
Shaunna Rospierski and Sage Golisano are the student co-coordinators with the ACA.
“We oversee all the planning and have made all the arrangements for this year’s Fall Sweep,” said Golisano.
She went into detail about how the event brings the community together.
“Our club, ACA, hands out fliers to all the community members to put on their door to participate in Fall Sweep. Since we have done that, we have received many emails from community members that are thankful for our event and can’t wait for this tradition to take place,” said Golisano.
Philanthropy chair of Delta Phi Epsilon Julia Haley describes how her sorority makes the event a tradition.
“We participate in Fall Sweep every year, and I think it’s very beneficial to give back to the community we live in,” said Haley.
Although the event creates enough turnout from clubs and organizations, it may be hard to convince other students to fit time into their busy schedule for it.
“I think especially for college students, with busy schedules and everything, it’s hard to take time to give back to the community. But Fall Sweep is a way to give back to the families that live in Fredonia, and a way for the students to help bond with the community members and clean up the town,” said Haley.
The event doesn’t take too much out of a student’s day, either.
“When so many groups and organizations come together, it gets done so quickly and truly makes a difference to the families living in Fredonia,” said Haley.
“This is only one of the ways that we can see our event making an impact in our community,” said Golisano.
