Relay for Life is a walk to benefit the American Cancer Society.

According to the Coordinator of Volunteer and Community Services, Joyce Smith, the event offers everyone in the community as well as students, staff and faculty an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.

“This is the thirteenth year for Relay for Life. Last year over 400 students participated in this event,” Smith said.

This year at SUNY Fredonia, various clubs and organizations helped put together decorations in preparation for Relay for Life.

These clubs, which included Delta Chi, Sigma Gamma Phi, Kappa Sigma, art students and Operation Smile volunteered their time to help prepare for the event.

Relay for Life will be held this Saturday, March 23 from 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. in Steele Hall.

The layout of Relay for Life consists of an opening ceremony, a survivor/caregiver walk, a luminaria ceremony and a closing ceremony.

The night will also feature a variety of entertainment, featured performances, ceremonies and games.

“This year we have a celebratory theme of Carnival. All of our decorations will be bright and exciting,” said Lindsey Anderson, president and chair of Relay for Life. Anderson says that Relay is running a discount until Friday, March 22 called FREDRELAY. This discount is to make registration more affordable for college students. “The discount will make the registration fee $5 which we are really excited to share with the campus,” Anderson said.

This discount is not only limited to campus, but also available to the rest of the community.

“If people have friends not on campus or family they’d like to have join this year, we’re opening our Relay For Life to them,” she said.

Anderson said that this year, being more ambitious is something to look forward to.

“There’s a game at every campsite and one for raffle tickets too. There are many exciting things this year because the campus chose such a bright theme,” Anderson said. “We are also available to help people register.”

Paint Cranston Purple will be on Friday, March 22.

Paint Cranston Purple is an event to bring awareness to Relay for Life in hopes to increase the fundraising total.

“Basically food and stuff is purple and we decorate the area and table to help register more people,” Anderson said.

“If people have any questions they’d like to have answered they can see us there or email me,” Anderson said. Anderson can be reached at lbanderson@fredonia.edu.

All who are interested can register online at RelayForLife.org/FredoniaUNY.
