In the midst of SUNY Fredonia’s switch to distance learning, several campus events were canceled to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
One of these highly anticipated events was Black Student Union’s (BSU) annual fashion show, which faced cancellation just two weeks before it was set to happen.
Deoniss Jackson, the fashion show’s coordinator, had been working alongside other members of BSU on the show since July of last year.
She expressed how disappointing it was to see the show canceled.
“We were preparing for this to be the biggest show, me and my committee worked so hard getting the show ready… I was ready for all the work to come to life.”
Jackson has been the show’s coordinator for the past two years and is now in her senior year.
Some of this year’s big changes included a plethora of vendors, a more traditional modeling stage with closer seating, brand new designers attending the show for the first time, three performances and a surprise tribute to the late Nipsey Hussle and Kobe Bryant.
Although the spectacular fashion show never got to take the stage, BSU undeniably deserves recognition for pouring their hearts out into such an important event.
Those involved put in hours of rehearsals with over 60 models, had countless phone calls with companies and designers, waited patiently for dozens of online orders and were fully prepared to spend thousands of dollars to make the show run successfully.
Their hard work proves how special the BSU fashion show is for everyone, and they can rest assured knowing that this hard work will serve as inspiration for next year’s show.
One thing that’s certain is that the remarkable work Jackson and other BSU members put into the fashion show will not have been done in vain; if anything, next year’s fashion show is bound to be glorious.
