How to spend Mother’s Day during quarantine

ALYSSA BUMP

It may seem nearly impossible to do something enjoyable for Mother’s Day since most nonessential businesses are closed for the time being.

However, fun can be found within the walls of your own home.

Here are some ideas on how to make this Mother’s Day special for all the moms in your life:

Make a card

You could go to a store and purchase a card for your loved one, but a homemade card holds more meaning.

Also, leaving your house for nonessential items should not be a risk you are willing to take.

Using paper from around the house, you can make pop-up or painted cards. You could even make a virtual card — also known as an E-card — that you could send through text that is interactive. Some even play songs. To find inspiration for a homemade card, a simple Google search will show over 46 million results.

Make a home cooked meal

Making a nice meal for the mother in your life is a great way to show your appreciation.

Breakfast in bed is always a great choice, especially if you’re not the best at cooking.

If avoiding cooking entirely sounds better, you could make your own edible arrangement out of fruit.

If you want your loved one to join in the fun, you could always make dessert together.

Do a craft together

Treat your mom to a painting session or work on a scrapbook together.

You could knit or work on a puzzle; the possibilities are endless.

For some more original ideas, Pinterest has great ones, especially ones that young kids can partake in.

At-home spa day

Even though salons are closed, mani-pedis can be done at home.

Use face masks you have lying around together.

Maybe even draw your mom a bath for all the hard work she does.

Plan an outing for after quarantine

It’s a shame Mother’s Day can’t be spent somewhere special, but you can always plan something nice once life returns to normal.

Maybe purchase a gift card online or plan to make reservations at your favorite restaurant.

Wherever you and your mom share a special place together, you can visit and recreate Mother’s Day there.

Order presents

If you are insistent on buying your loved one something special, you can always order it online.

Maybe get her those shoes she’s been saving up for or a nice necklace.

Many online businesses are still up and running, such as Amazon.

Some great options are on Etsy where you can support small businesses and artists.

If you can’t think of anything, try getting an item with your family on a mug, blanket or calendar.

But what if you can’t see your mom on Mother’s Day? Well, there are a few options.

Try to video call her on FaceTime or Skype; you could even eat a meal together virtually.

You could also send her a homemade letter in the mail, or you could ship a package to her.

Whether or not you are able to spend this holiday with the moms in your life, it’s the thought that counts.

Just do your best to make them feel appreciated, loved and valued.

Make them feel loved not only on May 10, but every day.
