A student-run organization Applied Communications Association (ACA)  is hosting its annual community service event, Fall Sweep. For the past 12 years, the event has been drawing hundreds of students into the Fredonia community to rake leaves in residents’ lawns. Last year, 400 students were in attendance.

The event is meant to help create positive relations between the campus and the local community. “The goal of Fall Sweep is to give back to the community of Fredonia and to get students on campus involved in something great” according to Amarah Ghori, the President of ACA.

The event will take place on Sat, Nov 11th at 11 a.m. where participants are to meet in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room. Refreshments, food, and raffles will be offered during opening remarks before heading out to rake leaves. After, everyone will be sent off to the streets between Temple and the Birchwood area.

Three dozen tarps and over a hundred rakes will be available. Afterward, any equipment provided should be returned to ACA members at LoGrasso Hall.

For anyone interested in getting their lawn raked, look out for flyers that will be put on neighborhood porches. Residents who would like their lawn raked are advised to hang the flyer on their front door or mailbox the day of the event.

All student groups, organizations, and individual students, are recommended to participate. “I hope that students participating will feel a sense of pride in the work that they’ll accomplish in helping the community,” said Ghori.

“I want to thank everyone in the past that has participated and thank the individuals that are currently participating in helping bring the community together…Without their constant participation and support, we wouldn’t be able to continue to do this amazing event” she added.

Events like Fall Sweep provide a valuable source of community and connection which are important in student lives.
