Fredonia Radio Systems prepares annual Rock ‘N’ Skate event

Get ready to travel back to the ‘80s this weekend with Fredonia Radio Systems (FRS).

On Friday, Feb. 23, the campus radio station will be holding their annual Rock ‘N’ Skate event, and this year, it’s ‘80s-themed.

The event will be held at the Steele Hall Ice Rink between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Admission will be $5 and skates will be available to rent for $4.

Outside of the ice skating, there will be food such as pizza and popcorn, raffles and more.

Music Director and event organizer Brian Shin said, “Come dressed in your best ‘80s gear,” as there may also be a costume contest.

The theme for this year’s Rock ‘N’ Skate isn’t random either.

FRS is celebrating a big birthday this year with the 40th anniversary of High Noon Friday, their longest-running variety radio show.

High Noon Friday originally began as a way for students to help inform the community, as the show includes campus, local, national and international news, as well as sports and weather.

Ever since its founding in the ‘80s, students have been passing the show down, keeping it on air ever since.

High Noon Friday was founded in the ‘80s, and the Rock ‘N’ Skate organizers felt it was only right to pick the ‘80s as their theme.

WDVL Program Director and organizer Elena Fitzgerald said that the producers of High Noon Friday will be MCing/hosting the event, making announcements to the skaters in attendance.

Shin said, “Since it’s High Noon Friday’s 40th anniversary, I’m excited to see how that team will host the event.”

There are many aspects of Rock ‘N’ Skate that seem to have the organizers excited.

Fitzgerald said, “It’s a very good way to bring the campus and community together in the spring semester, during the wintertime.”

WCVF Program Director and organizer Heather Leonardi said, “I’m mostly excited to see everyone come together and have a fun night celebrating 40 years of High Noon Friday.”

It seems like the community aspect of the event is what matters most to the organizers.

As a reminder, everything at Rock ‘N’ Skate will be cash only, so be sure to stop at the ATM before coming.

Fitzgerald said, “Thank you for the support as always; we wouldn’t keep doing this event if we didn’t have people attending and enjoying the night.”
