New York primary elections for both the Republicans and the Democrats will be held on April 19 this year. With both parties being quite divided this primary season, some have said that the New York primary may be quite important, so this article will show you how to make sure you’re eligible to vote in New York.

If you’re not sure
- You can look it up online at www.voterlookup.elections.state.ny.us/
No
- You must submit your voter application postmarked by March 25. You can download a voter registration form from the Official New York Board of Elections website, fill it out and mail it in, or you can register online on the New York DMV website.

(if yes, then) Are you registered with a political party?
Yes
- You can vote in the primary for the party you are registered with.
No
- New York is a closed primary election, so you must be registered as a member of either the Democratic or Republican party to vote in its primary. The deadline to switch party registration was Oct. 9.
[If yes above] Are you registered to vote in Chautauqua County?
Yes
- You can look up your polling place online at www.voterlookup.elections.state.ny.us/votersearch.aspx or contact the county board of elections.
No
- You must be registered in Chautauqua County to vote at a poll in said county, and if you’re not registered in Chautauqua you must submit an absentee ballot. You must submit your absentee ballot postmarked by April 18 at the latest. You can download the absentee ballot at the New York Board of Elections official website
- You can also vote in the county you are registered in in-person
