THE QUARTERBACK
Lovercall Host
Hello!
We are The Electrician, The Architect and The Quarterback: producers and hosts of the radio show Lovercall right here at Fredonia. Lovercall is an anonymous late-night talk show about love, relationships and more. Students who come on the show use a codename to protect their identities when discussing potentially personal topics, hence the codenames of the writers of this column.
“The Electrician” is a 21-year-old cisgender female student who uses she/her pronouns and is a senior at Fredonia.
“The Architect” is a 21-year-old cisgender male student who uses he/him pronouns and is a senior at Fredonia.
“The Quarterback” is a 19-year-old cisgender male student who uses he/him pronouns and is a sophomore at Fredonia.
On each episode, the hosts and guests of Lovercall participate in a variety of segments. The cast discusses a relevant news story, a date idea, a wacky game and a main topic for the episode.
Listeners also write into the show, either via Fredonia Radio’s Instagram, @fredonia_radio, on Yik Yak, or through the QR code provided in this column.
We typically answer the questions asked right here in this column, so be sure to look out for student stories and questions in future columns.
The show is now being streamed weekly on Wednesday nights from 10 p.m. to 12 a.m. on WDVL 89.5 on www.fredoniaradio.com.
This column runs in conjunction with Lovercall and can be found both in print and online at fredonialeader.org.
Date idea of the week
We hope to provide our fellow students with a fun and unique date idea in every column. These “date” ideas aren’t just for romantic partners — you could go with your friends, your classmates or you can even go solo for a fun activity in Fredonia.
Valentine’s Day is a holiday centered around expressing love, and what better way to do that than writing a letter?
These letters can be deep and meaningful if you choose, or they could also be lighthearted and silly.
Writing letters is also a great way to do Valentine’s Day on a budget.
Sometimes, people can get caught up in the pressure to spend a fortune on all sorts of gifts for their Valentine.
All you need to write a letter is a pen, some paper and the love in your heart.
One of our guests mentioned the old cliche of “it’s the thought that counts,” and we felt that it really applies to Valentine’s Day.
These letters can also be written to yourself as a form of self-love, which we strongly believe in at Lovercall.
Hot or Not
During last week’s episode, we introduced a new segment on Lovercall: “Hot or Not.”
In this segment, we present different aspects of a topic and ask our guests whether they find that thing “hot,” as in they like it, or “not.”
This week, our Hot or Not segment was based on Valentine’s Day cliches.
Take a look at our topics and play along!
Here are our topics:
- Getting/receiving flowers (our consensus: hot)
- Dinner at a fancy restaurant (our consensus: not, cooking at home is better!)
- Chocolates in those little heart shaped containers (our consensus: hot)
- A secret admirer (our consensus: mixed. Some of us want the thrill, some of us would be concerned)
- Flower petals on the bed (our consensus: hot)
- Champagne or wine (our consensus: hot if you’re at least 21)
- Conversation hearts (our consensus: hot by design, not by taste)
Valentine’s Day
This semester, we were fortunate that Valentine’s Day fell on a Wednesday: the day Lovercall airs.
Because of this, we decided to focus on all things Valentine’s Day.
First, we discussed how many do not like the holiday due to its consumerism and materialism basis.
However, we here at Lovercall would like to focus instead on how Valentine’s Day represents a day of love.
This love can be for friends, family, a romantic partner, pets or even yourself.
While many see Valentine’s Day as just being for lovers, we encourage you to see it as an excuse to feel loved.
Many participate in “Galentine’s Day,” in which many will have a girls’ night together.
Others decide to have a “Palentine’s Day,” where they spend the day with friends.
Or, you could even take the day as acting on self love, practicing self care methods. This is actually our topic for Wednesday, Feb. 21.
Between our producers and guests, we decided that Valentine’s Day is what you make of it.
If you choose to go all out, that’s a decision between you and your partner.
However, if you choose to do something simple, that’s also great.
We agree that there is often a lot of pressure that comes along with the holiday.
Many feel that they need to impress their partner by spending a lot of money on gifts or a fancy dinner.
But, we here at Lovercall believe that you can even do something simple, such as making dinner at home or even just making a point to spend intentional, uninterrupted time together.
No matter what you make of it, use Valentine’s Day as an excuse to spread love.
Marissa’s Playlist Shoutout
The Opinion Editor of The Leader, Marissa Burr, wrote an article for the opinion section that appeared online last week.
Her article featured a Valentine’s Day playlist, highlighting toxic versus healthy relationships.
We here at Lovercall encourage you to take a look at this Valentine’s Day playlist and give it a listen!
