This weekend resulted in a double loss for the men’s soccer team. They dropped a 4-0 loss against the Plattsburgh Cardinals on Friday and an overtime loss of 4-3 against the Potsdam Bears on Saturday.
The Cardinals scored its first of four goals in the 15th minute of the first half with a shot by Plattsburgh. A Fredonia mistake led to this open-net goal two minutes after Plattsburgh was able to finish and get their second goal of the game.
The Blue Devils were able to hold off Plattsburgh to two goals in the first half, but allowed two more goals in their net in the second half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sammy Torrelli had three saves against the Cardinals.
Junior captain Mike Biggane, sophomore Sam DeFranks and junior Vinny Chimetto all produced shots on Plattsburgh’s net.
The loss brought the Blue Devils to 2-2-2 in the SUNYAC Conference and 8-3-3 overall. Plattsburgh improved their record to 8-6-1 overall, and 3-3 in the SUNYAC Conference.
Trying to shake off Friday’s loss and celebrate Senior Day at University Stadium, the men kicked off their Senior Day against the Potsdam Bears.
Fredonia showed up to play by scoring two goals by junior Paul Reinis and sophomore Ryan Keller, silencing the Bears in the first half. Reinis scored in the 19th minute by moving past a defender and taking a quick shot in the box. Within two minutes, Keller scored off of his own free kick outside the box to make a bold lead at halftime.
Potsdam rallied back quickly at the beginning of the second half by scoring two goals in the 48th and 57th minutes. The first goal came from a powerful strike outside of Fredonia’s box. The second came from a scrummage in the box which resulted in Potsdam’s player finishing it past sophomore goalkeeper Sammy Torrelli.
Torrelli had five saves in net for Fredonia against the Bears.
Fredonia’s third goal came from a penalty kick after freshman Mohamed Hussein was taken down during a cross by Keller into the box. Coach P.J. Gondek chose Keller to take the kick, and Keller scored his second goal of the game in the 69th minute.
With 2:49 remaining, Potsdam fired a shot off of a throw in to tie the game 3-3. The game stayed tied until the end of regulation, sending both teams into overtime. In overtime, Potsdam finished the game with six minutes remaining.
The upsetting loss brought the Blue Devil’s record to 2-2-3 in the SUNYAC Conference, and 8-3-4 overall.
Before the game, Fredonia honored its four seniors, A.J Grecco, Michael Schriener, Chase Lipshie and Sam Guider.
This weekend Fredonia will be traveling to Oneonta and New Paltz for their final conference games in SUNYAC play.
