Special to The Leader
The first full week of April is in the books, and it’s starting to feel a little more like spring.
Teams are catching up with games that were postponed and field conditions are slowly getting better. Ludwig Field is about halfway there with improving conditions to the infield, but the outfield still needs more time to improve.
The Fredonia softball team has a 7-13 overall record, and they’re 2-4 in the conference through the first four weeks of the season. The team was home this past week as Buffalo State, Brockport and Geneseo came to play.
The women came away even with a win and a loss versus Buffalo State and Brockport, but lost twice to Geneseo. This week they have games on the road in Potsdam, N.Y., and Plattsburgh, N.Y. The SUNYAC double-headers will be Friday starting at 3:00 p.m. and Saturday starting at 11:00 a.m.
The Fredonia baseball team has a 9-13 overall record, and they’re 6-3 in the conference. The team had four games this week at home against Penn State Behrend and Cortland.
Unfortunately, the Blue Devils could not get a win in any of the four games. They hope to have better luck this week when they start things off Wednesday against Alleghany.
The game is at home and starts at 3:00 p.m. This weekend the men have a triple header against Brockport with one game on Friday and two on Saturday. The games start at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, and at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The Fredonia women’s lacrosse team has a 3-9 overall record and are 0-5 in the conference. The lady Blue Devils had two games this past week and lost both of them.
They look forward to getting back on the field this week as they play Brockport on Wednesday afternoon at home in University Stadium. On Saturday, they travel to Potsdam for a game at 12:00 p.m. There are five regular season games left to play, and four are against SUNYAC teams.
This past weekend the men’s and women’s track and field team competed in the Dave Labor Invitational in Slippery Rock, Pa. Two women on the track and field team came in first place in their respective competitions.
Hannah Kurbs, a senior at Fredonia, had the best time in the women’s 5000 meter run in 18:44.9. Cassandra Serafin, a sophomore at Fredonia, jumped the farthest in the women’s triple jump with a distance of 10.93m. The track and field teams will be at Westminster College this weekend.
