Fredonia’s sports teams continued their fall season grind this past week, with men and womens soccer, cross country, volleyball and tennis all competing.

For the men’s soccer team, the record for the week was an even 1-1-1. The first match of the week happened on Sept. 6, a 2-2 tie against Houghton at home. Scoring for the Blue Devils was first Samuel Johnson on a corner kick assist by Matt Cullen. The second of the day was by Colin Merkey.

The next day, the men came up just short to Westminster in a score of 1-2. Matt Cullen scored the lone goal for the Devils on a free kick. The men did collect a win, beating Nazareth in a score of 2-1 at home. The second goal by Fredonia was scored by Cole Teelin from an assist by Matt Cullen.

The women’s soccer team had one game cancelled and posted a 1-1 record on the week. The first game was Sept. 6, a 4-0 win against D’Youville. Scoring for the Blue Devils was Melanie Minotti, who had a hat trick on the night with three goals.

The second game played was a 0-1 loss to Mount Union on Sept. 7.

The last game was rained out with 32 minutes left in the second half against Allegheny on Wednesday.

The tennis team played two of their three scheduled matches this past week, winning both by large margins.

The first match they played was a 9-0 sweep against Alfred on Sept 10. Winning sets in the doubles were Anna Chiacchia and Jane Chiacchia in a score of 8-1, Mikayla Johnson and Sarah Bunk in a 8-0 sweep and Avril King and Taylor Marelli in a score of 8-2.

In the singles matches, Anna Chiacchia won 6-1, 6-0, Bunk won 7-6, 6-3, Jane Chiacchia won 7-5, 6-0, Marelli won 6-3, 6 -3, King won 6-1, 6-3 and Ashley Mills won 6-4, 6-2.

The second match they played was Sept. 12 against Houghton on the road, winning in a score of 8-1. Winning doubles matches were Anna Chiacchia and Bunk in a score of 8-3, Jane Chiacchia and Marelli in a score of 8-2 and King and Mills in a score of 8-3.

The Blue Devils won five of six singles matches, with Bunk winning 6-0, 6-0, Anna Chiacchia winning 6-0, 6-0, Marelli winning 6-3, 1-6, 10-4, Jane Chiacchia winning 6-4, 4-6, 10-7, King 6-3, 6-1 and Mills losing 6-4, 1-6, 5-10.

The team traveled to Brockport Saturday for their first conference match, finishing in a win with an overall score of 6-3.

The Fredonia volleyball team played in Dods Hall Sept. 11 against Penn State Behrend, coming out with a win in a 3-2 final score. The set scores were 25-22, 21-25, 22-25, 25-18 and 15-13. Leading the team in kills was Emma Booth and Emily Jones with 14 each, followed by Emily Leone with nine and Caroline Roy with eight.
