Fredonia sports update

Special to The Leader

This week, there were quite a few different teams that took the field. Although both the men’s and women’s cross country teams had the weekend off, there were SUNYAC matchups galore.

For starters, the women’s tennis team faced off against Oneonta on Friday, New Paltz on Saturday and Plattsburgh on Sunday. The Blue Devils couldn’t pull out a victory throughout weekend, however.

The loss placed them in a tie for fourth place in the conference, but due to tiebreakers, their season ended without a trip to the SUNYAC Championships.

The men’s soccer team participated in games on both Friday and Saturday, falling short in a 0-2 loss to Oneonta and 1-2 to New Paltz, both at home. The men’s team is beginning to have to operate in do-or-die mode the rest of the way in order to make the SUNYAC Championships.

This week, they play two SUNYAC matchups at Geneseo on Friday and Brockport on Saturday.

The rest of the regular season includes bouts against Buffalo State, Oswego and Cortland.

As for the women’s soccer team, they came away from the weekend road-trip with a loss to Oneonta on Friday with a score of 0-1 before a tie against New Paltz on Saturday that took two overtimes to finish.

The women’s team is in a position to push for a spot in the conference championships with their current record, but this weekend will be a test. They host Geneseo on Friday before Brockport comes to town Saturday afternoon in what should be a good matchup.

The rest of their season looks to be a deciding factor, as after this weekend three of their final four games are against SUNYAC teams, which are Buffalo State, Oswego and Cortland, with a game against St. John Fisher in the mix as well.

The last team to compete this weekend was the women’s volleyball team, who lost both games of their road trip. The first was a 0-3 loss to Brockport on Friday before a 0-3 loss to Geneseo on Saturday.

This team’s season is much farther from the end than the teams listed above, as they still have 12 games before the possibility of a postseason berth.

This week, they start off on the road against Houghton before they play host to the Fredonia tri-match and face off against Susquehanna and the University of Rochester. While none of these games are SUNYAC matchups, they do have quite a bit on the line, as these games could get the Blue Devils back on track after the recent five-match losing streak.
