SUNYAC cancels winter sports for 2020-2021 season

On Monday at 2 p.m., it was announced over the SUNYAC website that there would be no winter sports this season.

This marks the third straight competitive season that the SUNYAC will have not competed in due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although there was much thought put into this decision, it seems as though it may have been an early call on the part of the SUNYAC, as the Division III National Championships as of now are still going to be held, following COVID guidelines.

Fredonia seemed to have had a solid plan in place for the upcoming season for winter sports such as basketball, hockey, swimming and diving and track and field. Every athlete would have been tested three times per week every week in order to compete and travel to competitions.

That wasn’t enough for the entire SUNYAC to feel comfortable with holding a season.

For some teams, the news comes as a larger blow than others.

Hockey and basketball had already been approved for play starting in February, with their schedules being made and preparations to the ice rink already underway.

Fredonia athletes can still practice for the winter season, which is more than what most other SUNYAC schools are allowing for their athletes.

All in all, there is still much more to come of this, but airing on the side of caution isn’t the worst idea to follow through with.

Now athletes can only hope that spring sports here at Fredonia will resume as planned for the 2021 season, as no decision has been made on that yet.
