One of Fredonia’s teams currently in action this season is the women’s lacrosse team. The team is currently 1–11 overall and 0–5 in SUNYAC competition. This season has come with unexpected twists and turns, but the team has grown and is beginning to show signs of improvement each game.
At the start of the winter semester, the team’s former coach stepped away, leaving the team without a coach until just weeks before the season. Coach Alanna Herne and Coach Marissa Cussins were then brought in to run the team and lead them through the season.
“Our team has responded very positively to our changes in coaches. It was very hard for us to come back after winter break with no coach, but when we found out [Coach Cussins] and [Coach Herne] were hired, we were so excited. They saved our season and we are lucky to have them as coaches,” said Tessa Brady, a senior psychology major and member of the team.
Herne said, “The team has responded with great energy and hunger since [Cussins] and myself took over. We face challenges and take them head on as a team.”
While the season has not gone as the team and many had hoped, both the coaches and players still have goals they plan to accomplish.
“I hope that we can turn our season around this week as we have six games left in the season and are working very hard each practice to become better players so we can get some wins under our belt,” said Brady.
“[We] hope to continue to put in the work and reach the goals that we set by ourselves,” Herne added.
Some of the key players toward the Blue Devils rebuilding process this season have been Brady and Sadie Brown, a junior criminal justice major, according to Herne.
“[Brown and Brady] continue to lead by example with their actions and have always put the team first. [Brown] has been crucial on the defensive end physically and continues to bring positive energy to the team. [Brady] on the other hand, completely bought into and conquered a new position and consistently puts forth all of her effort day in and day out.”
Brady is a senior this season and will be finished with her Blue Devil career in just a few short weeks.
“As a senior, I hope to be remembered by my teammates as someone that they could look to for help or support, whether it was on or off the field,” Brady said.
She advises incoming athletes with this: “The years go by so fast, and the best way to get the most out of your time here is to always get involved with other teams. Make friends with everyone because the people you meet and the memories you make will last forever.”
