Coming into the game against St. John Fisher College, the Fredonia women’s soccer team was sitting at 2-4 and were looking for a spark to get their season going.
After a 2-0 loss to RIT in their previous game, the women Blue Devils had one more game on the road in Rochester before coming home for the next couple of games.
The game against SJFC was a competitive matchup as both teams struggled on offense the whole game. Both goalies played well as the shot totals were 11-10 in favor of Fredonia, but it would be Fredonia that came out on top in the end.
The game went into double overtime when junior Aleeya Clemons scored in the beginning of the second overtime off a breakaway to give Fredonia the win. SJFC turned the ball over in their own zone and paid for it as Clemons beat her defender to set up the breakaway goal.
Clemons won the game in the second overtime and would have won it in the first overtime if not for a great save by the SJFC goalie.
Fredonia freshman goalie Marissa Quimby made five saves in the shutout.
Coming off a good win in Rochester, the women Blue Devils returned home to face Brockport in their first SUNYAC game of the year. Fredonia got off to a hot start as Clemons set up junior Abby Price on a cross that she headed into the net to put Fredonia up in the third minute of action.
Fredonia and Brockport would play an even game until the final whistle where Fredonia would prevail 1-0. Goalie Marissa Quimby recorded her second shutout of the week, saving four shots in the winning effort.
When discussing the game, Coach Chris Case explained that defense was the name of the game after getting up early in the game.
“We took the play wide, scored early and then played defense, defense, defense.”
The last game of the week was an important game against nationally ranked Geneseo. Geneseo showed why they were nationally ranked as they steamrolled Fredonia at home 3-0.
Geneseo, who’s ranked number nine in the NCAA Division III poll, outshot Fredonia 28-3, and Fredonia was lucky the score wasn’t higher.
Geneseo took the lead in minute 18 off a chip shot after Geneseo’s Dominica Piccoli got through the Blue Devils’ defense. They would extend the lead in minute 31 as Piccoli would score again on another chip in the box.
Fredonia would give up a penalty two minutes later and Geneseo would convert on that to make the game 3-0. The Blue Devils had one shot on goal in the game and that shot was easily saved by the Geneseo goalie. Fredonia goalie Marissa Quimby had 10 saves and did a decent job considering all the pressure she faced from Geneseo.
Junior Kendall Owczarak came in for Quimby at the end of the game and didn’t face a shot.
The Fredonia women’s soccer team has three more games at University Stadium before heading on the road for a few games. SUNYAC season is here and the time is now for the Blue Devils to make a move. The games only get more important from here, and we will see if the women Blue Devils can make a push at the playoffs.
