Fredonia announces new football team

You asked for it, and now it’s finally here: Fredonia is getting a football team!

Because it was announced in the Fredonia Campus Report email from last week, it is likely that nobody heard about this development, but no need to worry, we have you covered.

We got a chance to talk to the coach of the team, who has asked to remain anonymous for now, so we will be referring to him as Coach Will Welichick.

“We are very excited to get the team together and get to work,” Coach Welichick said. “The team will consist of Blue Devils from other sports that we decided would be a good fit for football.”

Everyone who knows football knows that one of the keys to a good offense is a strong offensive line.

This is why Coach Welichick has decided that Anthony Ruiz from Men’s Cross Country and Sydney Booth from Women’s Lacrosse will be playing the offensive tackle positions.

When asked if height was considered when choosing these players (Ruiz stands at 5’3” and Booth at 5’0”) Coach Welichick responded confidently.

“A modern offensive line needs to be quick, and strong. Ruiz has proved his speed on the cross country course, and Booth is a brick wall in net for her team.”

The head of any team, of course, is the quarterback. For this position, Coach Welichick has picked Christina Whitters, thrower for the Women’s Track Team.

“Whitters represents everything you need from a quarterback. She’s got amazing arm strength, and she’s even taller than Kyler Murray,” Welichick stated.

At wide receiver, we had high hopes for the selections. Welichick went with Ari Castellino from Cheerleading and Christie Ackendorf from Volleyball.

“I like to have options for my receivers,” Welichick stated. “Having a strong, tall receiver like Ackendorf and a sneaky, athletic receiver like Castellino gives me those options.”

At running back, Welichick snagged Lauren Ditchey from the Women’s Swimming and Diving team.

“Ditchey has leg strength,” Welichick said of his new feature back, “She can do it all.”

When asked if it was a good idea to put an athlete from one of the few sports that doesn’t actually run at running back, Welichick threatened to walk from the interview, so we backed down.

Finally, we asked about his plans for a punter. Welichick decided on 6’5” defenseman Anders Johnson from the Hockey team.

“I like my punters to be athletes too. Johnson can punt the ball, and make the tackle if he needs to.”

While we aren’t sure if the team will win any games, we sure are excited to watch them this fall!
