Fredonia sports update

Has it been a long time since The Leader has had one of these or what!

After over 12 months without competition, SUNY Fredonia has finally had their first intercollegiate games this spring.

This past week began competition for both our men’s baseball team and our women’s lacrosse team.

The baseball team put out a solid first showing at home against Jamestown Community College, winning in a score of 7-3.

Some of the standouts on offense in the game included Pat Bigham, who had a two run home run in the fifth inning of play, and Tylor Murphy, who had two doubles in the game.

On the mound, the team had seven pitchers throw scoreless outings and ten total strikeouts in the game.

More important than the outcome of the game was the experience of being back out on the field.

Having no spectators was also a major change that the team has to adjust to, but the team seems to be taking it in stride.

As for the lady Blue Devils, they were shaking off the rust of having over a full year off since their last game. The team lost by a score of 6-16 to Allegheny at home. As they begin to get into the swing of things and learn to play with a whole new group of people, the results will begin to change for the better.

Both of these teams will continue to play this week, while women’s softball and men’s and women’s track & field will have their first contests this upcoming week.
