Fredonia sports update

After a big week for Fredonia Sports, it felt a bit more like the last year has this week.

With many postponements and cancellations, there aren’t many games to touch upon.

With that being said, there were still games, and we’re going to cover them all the same.

Fredonia’s tennis team started the week off with a close loss on Monday to SUNYAC foe, Oswego State, by a score of 5-4. Princess Unita Obi and Gabby Gance pulled off the team’s only victory in the three doubles matches in a score of 8-3. Gance, Jane Chiacchia and Bella Surma took home wins in the singles matches on the day.

The team’s contests against Penn State Behrend on Wednesday and Geneseo on Thursday were postponed to a later date.

Next week, the Blue Devils face off in their regular season finale at home against Brockport on Saturday May 1, as their scheduled match against Geneseo the next day was canceled.

On the diamond, the Fredonia softball team started off the week with a doubleheader split against Oswego on April 18.

In the first game, the Devils won by a score of 6-3. Eva Fitzsimmons led the way with a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Katie Yudin, Maria Caviris and Delana Thomas each also drove in a run apiece in the win.

The second game of the set came down to the wire, but the team couldn’t ultimately pull out the win, with a double play with the bases loaded ending the rally. The score ended 4-3 in favor of Oswego.

The next two doubleheaders scheduled (D’Youville on Tuesday, St. John Fisher on Thursday) were cancelled.

Saturday’s contest against Brockport was also cancelled after the team’s test results didn’t arrive on time.

Next week, the Blue Devils will face Buffalo State on Wednesday and Geneseo Saturday.

As for Fredonia’s baseball team, they dropped both games of their Tuesday doubleheader against SUNY Oswego. In the first game Johnny Genau had two RBI’s, while Tylor Murphy and Ryan Hann each had an RBI as well in the 8-5 loss.

In the second game, the Blue Devils lost 10-5, with Brian Chatt driving in three total runs, including a home run and Kenny Benitez driving in the other two.

Their scheduled games against Alfred State were postponed. The team will play Alfred State Monday and Oswego State on Saturday this week.

The women’s lacrosse team did not play any of their three scheduled games this week after a positive test within the team. The team’s season has since been cancelled and their final record on the year was 6-2, with both wins coming in the last three games they played.

On the track, the men’s track and field team traveled to St. John Fisher on Friday and the women’s team on Saturday.

On the men’s side, there were some standout performances. On the track, the 4×800 meter team of Anthony Ruiz, Ryan Dunning, Mark Schneider and Collin Barmore won in a time of 8:31.89. Barmore also went 4:07.2 in the 1500 meter run, TyeRyan Burke ran 52.01 and Topher Elkins went 52.89 in the 400 meter run and Toby Onuoha ran a 22.99 second 200 meter run.

In the field, Onuoha also jumped 13.42 meters in the triple jump, while Aaron Cember threw a 39.55 meter hammer throw.

On the women’s side, no one was able to travel Saturday due to the fact that their test results didn’t make it back from the lab in time.

The team travels to Brockport Saturday for their final regular season meet.
