Clubs and intramural sports: What they are and how to join

Like many other colleges, Fredonia has NCAA sponsored sports teams that students come to the school to play for. But these teams have large time commitments and standards of skill level that some people who are interested in playing sports may not want to deal with.

Club teams are abundant on campus. There are several club teams that have a school regulated team as well, like the recently formed Club Basketball.

The beauty of having clubs is that those clubs can offer less traditional sports that aren’t funded by the school and the NCAA, such as Fredonia Spikeball Club or the Fredonia LARPing Fellowship club.

Club sports give you the freedom to go to events when you have the time, but if you have a paper due the night of a meeting or need to study, you can.

You also don’t need to be good at the sport to play, as clubs are often open to any and everyone to do.

If you want something that’s more structured and want to compete against not only Fredonia students but neighboring schools as well, then you may want to join one of the intramural sports teams instead. One intramural sport that comes to mind is Ultimate Frisbee.

To sign up for an intramural program, you have to register on fredoniabluedevils.com under the intramural sports section, then choose which one you want to register for, fill out the information forms and you’re good to go.

As for signing up for clubs, these tend to vary. The easiest way to do so is by going to Activities Night at the beginning of the semester and finding the club you want to join. The clubs will have an email list where you can sign up with your school email to be given the know-how of what’s going on by the club president.

If you don’t go to Activities Night, you’ll have to go to fredonia.edu/student-life/clubs-organizations and do a scroll through of the active clubs on the list to find what you’re looking for.

Getting out there and meeting people is what college is all about, so if you like a sport, try out the club or intramural of it.
