This past week was an eventful and telling week for the Blue Devils women’s basketball team. After starting the year 2-1, the team knew it had a challenge coming up — the start of SUNYAC play.
The Blue Devils began the week with a non-conference game Tuesday at home against Alfred University. This was a complete game for the Blue Devils, as 10 different players registered points for this team.
They were dominant in the paint. Post players senior Sabrina Macaulay and freshmen Jenna Einink combined for 24 points and 21 rebounds to lead Fredonia to a solid win over the Saxons. The final score was 80-70.
When asked about her dominate performance in the paint throughout the game Tuesday, Macaulay was quick to send recognition toward her teammates.
“My team sets me up for the baskets that I make and I set them up for their makes. We work as a team, there’s no other way to be successful,” said Macaulay.
Fredonia took on its first SUNYAC opponent of the year on Friday night. The Blue Devils ran up the score to a 32-13 lead over Oswego with 3:13 left in the half.
The Blue Devils dominated all aspects of this game. Bench points were key in this one with Einink put up a whopping 14 points and 7 rebounds off the pine.
Junior Kathryn Halloran had something to say after this commanding 79-39 victory against Oswego who was also the team’s first SUNYAC opponent.
“It gives our team extreme confidence heading into our other games,” said Halloran.
That it did as on Saturday as the team had another huge SUNYAC game against the Cortland Red Dragons. The confidence rolled over into this game from last just like Halloran said it would as the Blue Devils won defeated the Red Dragons 75-71.
Although this was Fredonia’s toughest game to date, it did a great job competing throughout. Also multiple backups played a huge roll in this game for the Blue Devils.
Einink had another big game off the bench as the freshman proves to be a force to recon with. She played to the tune of 6 points, 9 rebounds and 5 blocked shots.
Another sixth man worth noting is junior Khee Nance. She has looked nice this year from beyond the arc and continued to add more points to her season total adding 10 points in this game.
Now after a tough busy week and three wins in a row Fredonia has time to sit back and relax looking at a 5-1 overall record and 2-0 in the SUNYAC Conference.
When asked if this team could go all the way this year, senior center Katie Devine seemed very optimistic.
“I believe that we do have a good chance at winning it all this year. Our team is competitive, and, with that, we have every chance of winning,” said Devine.
The Blue Devils travel to St. John Fisher on Friday with a tip off time of 6 p.m., then play Alfred State on Sunday in the Steele Hall Fieldhouse at 2 p.m.
