BREAKING: Shelter in place issued for Franklin Avenue area of Dunkirk

Local residents are being asked to avoid an area of Dunkirk due to what has been described as an “ongoing police incident.”

According to WIVB, at 6:15 a.m., the Dunkirk Police Department issued a shelter in place advisory to residents in the Franklin Avenue area.

At 9:15 a.m., the Dunkirk Police Department shared a press release on Facebook that read, “The Dunkirk Police Department is asking residents to please avoid the area of Franklin Ave and W Doughty St due to an ongoing incident. Residents in that area are asked to please shelter in place.”

A photo shared by local resident Samantha Stuchell on Facebook showed a heavy police presence near Ellman’s Garage in Dunkirk.

Stuchell’s caption read, “Over by ellmans (in dunkirk) this morning, the police command setup. Hope everyone is OK. Not sure exactly what happened, have heard multiple things.”

WIVB’s article said that the notice from the Dunkirk Police Department told residents to “stay inside your house with doors locked until further notification.”

Multiple blocks of Doughty Street are currently closed. The closure appears to be between Hoyt Street and Lincoln Avenue.

Update as of 2:45 pm, March 23.

Police scanners have reported that a little after 1 pm a suspect was in custody, after a seven-hour long standoff with police.

The police  presences in the area is now clearing, as of 2:45 pm is is unclear if the shelter in place has been lifted.

The Leader will provide further updates as this story develops.
