Campus Media at Fredonia: Fredonia Radio, WNYF-TV and The Leader

BRIANNA HOWARD

Special to The Leader

With communication professors who have done everything from working on “Boss Baby” to winning an Emmy, it is no surprise the campus’ media clubs have been going strong for decades.

These clubs require no experience and can help build essential skills in all types of communication, making the clubs excellent to join for students of all majors.

Fredonia Radio Systems

Fredonia Radio Systems is a student-run radio station located in 115 McEwen Hall. Students can have shows on WCVF FM 88.9 “The Campus and Community Voice of Fredonia” and/or WDVL 89.5 “Fredonia’s Hit Radio Station.”

WCVF is broadcasted on FM waves to Chautauqua County, and can also be listened to on the staton’s website, fredoniaradiosystem.com. WDVL is an online-only station and can be heard from the TV in the Tim Horton’s on campus.

Some shows the station features include the 36-year-running variety show “High Noon Friday,” the late-night college hookup culture themed show “Lover Call” and the show all about gaming “VGS: Let’s Talk Gaming.”

Students can host shows by themselves or in a group. They can join the news team. If students are interested in postproduction, they can pre-record segments, PSAs and sweepers.

To see what’s new, check out the station’s Instagram page, @fredonia_radio, and YouTube page, “Fredonia Radio.”

WNYF-TV

WNYF-TV (also known as Western New York Fredonia TV) is a student-run, fully functioning television station located in the basement of Hendrix Hall, one of the residence buildings on campus.

At WNYF you can join the cast or crew of a live or postproduction show and get hands-on experience with running a TV station.

Current shows to join include “News 11,” the weekly live report of national, local and campus news, “Sports Hour,” a weekly live talk show about sports, and a soon-to-be named game show.

If none of these shows suit your fancy, members of the station are always welcome to create a new show.

Sign up during Activities Night at the beginning of the semester, or feel free to come say “hi” by stopping by the station. You can also visit various social media pages — @wnyftv on Instagram, Twitter and YouTube — and check out the website wnyftv.com.

The Leader

The Leader is SUNY Fredonia’s student-run newspaper, with its office in the Williams Center S206. Articles are posted on fredonialeader.org on a weekly basis and physical copies are printed and distributed in all academic buildings every two to three weeks.

The Leader engages its audience by offering a forum for divergent views on contemporary issues.

You can write for just one or multiple sections of The Leader, such as News, Life and Arts, Sports, Opinion and the Scallion (The Leader’s version of The Onion, a satirical publication).

In addition to providing timely news to the area through its publication, The Leader offers hands-on experience to students with a variety of interests.

New writers, copy editors, photographers, illustrators, layout editors, social media managers and business managers are always welcome.
