Club spotlight: Geology Club

SUNY Fredonia offers a wide variety of unique clubs on campus, and Geology Club is no different. The Geology Club is one of the more underrated clubs on campus. Each semester at Geology Club begins with a simple walk to Canadaway Creek to talk about its geological features, and to help clean it up while members introduce themselves.

“We’re a pretty laid back club; we know students are busy,” said Elizabeth Wightman, president of Geology Club.

Despite meeting once every two weeks, there is something for everyone to do. Kahoot trivia nights are a staple, along with rock painting and walks in the campus woodlot. The variety of activities allows students to express their knowledge and creativity in an inclusive environment.

The significant presence of women in the club should also be noted, as they make up 75% of the executive board. The amount of women in geoscience careers has steadily increased, despite geology being a male-dominated field.

According to the American Geosciences Institute, participation of women in geoscience occupations has increased from 22.5% in 2005 to 33.1% in 2018. Although there is a decline from 70% to 58% of women with terminal geoscience degrees, this is due to women earning degrees in other STEM fields such as biological sciences, physics, astronomy and engineering.

Geology Club can be a suitable place for women, especially female STEM majors, who may feel there is not enough representation of women in hard-science fields.

As for upcoming events, students can expect to see scavenger hunts with prizes. Near finals week, Geology Club will be hosting study sessions with snacks included. Goodie bags will also be available as end-of-semester treats for enduring another 15 weeks of assignments, exams and sleepless nights.

To suggest any activities for the Geology Club, feel free to email ewightman@fredonia.edu. If you are interested in attending an event, the club meets bi-weekly on Mondays at 5 p.m.
